PAKISTAN: Textile industry fears winter gas cuts
Pakistan's government is considering three months of gas cuts for the textile and clothing industry during the coming winter season.
Two proposals are currently under discussion to cope with the gas shortages in the winter: either cutting the industrial gas supply for three months, or allocating weekly gas quotas for all gas stations.
The Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Dr Asim Hussain, says there will be an acute shortage of gas in January, and the shortfall will continue to rise over the next two three years.
Shortfalls will be highest in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces because of the severe winter season in the northern part of the country. Around 75% of the textile and clothing industry is located in these provinces.
Mohsin Aziz, chairman of the All PakistanTextile Mills Association (APTMA), has expressed grave concern over the proposed gas curtailment and is calling for preferential treatment for gas supplies to the export-oriented textile industry.
He said the measures would lead to the shuttering of textile plants and possible unemployment for 3.5m textile and clothing industry workers.
Natural gas is the dominant energy source in the country, and the textile and clothing industry is the largest user.
