INDIA: Textile sector in financial crisis
The US$62bn Indian textile industry is facing a severe financial crisis as 122 companies, including major players such as Vardhman, reported net losses for the April-June quarter of 2011.
According to the Confederation of Indian Textile Industries (CITI), previously high cotton prices (that have now fallen) chewed up large amounts of cash, with major input purchases being made in December 2010. Sluggish demand for Indian apparel exports from the US and Europe has also hit income, with some companies actually halting production.
The problems have not been eased by the fall in cotton prices between March and July this year from US$1,400 to US$710 per candy (356 kg).
An official at the CITI told just-style that "some of the companies [he would not say which] have approached banks to have their working capital loans restructured or their payments deferred by up to two years".
The CITI itself has also approached the Reserve Bank of India, the country's central bank, demanding a credit relief package for affected companies.
Vardhman however is not considering loan rescheduling and hopes its quarterly loss will not recur. Darshan Lal Sharma, managing director of Vardhman Yarns & Threads said: "The upcoming festival session in India is expected to boost local demand for apparel, which will help companies recover".
