High Europe MEG spot prices dampen demand - buyers, resellers
LONDON (ICIS)--High European monoethylene glycol (MEG) spot prices are dampening demand, buyers said on Friday.
“Europe is too high...if [our] customers aren’t buying at these numbers, why should we?” a buyer said, adding that the current price “kills demand”.
Bulk price ideas are between €950-1,000/tonne ($1,357-1,429/tonne) CIF (cost, insurance and freight) NWE (northwest Europe), according to ICIS.
Europe is a net importer and has been receiving spot product from the US where prices command a replacement cost of around €940-950/tonne CFR (cost and freight) NWE, a trader explained. A reseller would have to add to this in order to make a profit.
European producers said recently that their prices had stepped up to those of alternative imports, particularly as there are domestic shutdowns planned for September and the fourth quarter.
The lack of bulk material has added an element of tightness to what is otherwise a balanced market, at least for now, players said.
“The structural development of the market is going to be short...there is not much risk of decreasing prices,” a producer warned. Justification for this includes new downstream capacity coming on-stream in Asia, which will compound heightened demand in the high season for fibres in Asia. This could potentially limit the flow of material into Europe, he added.
Sources agreed that it is not a problem to get a truck load but large volumes are harder to come by.
“I can’t find a European producer to supply me,” a bulk customer said.
Some traders are unwilling to take the risk of importing material at this time.
“I would buy at €10/tonne more for European product rather than wait for US material to come in,” one of them said.
With CIF prices equal to or higher than the value of European truck free carrier (FCA), those traders who are regularly involved in selling into the distribution market are now struggling.
“If I buy at €970/tonne CIF I need [to sell at] €1,000/tone FCA, but customers are unwilling to accept this because they don’t have demand,” according to a trader.
Truck buyers are living hand-to-mouth, sources said. Many are now returning to their desks after the holidays and are shocked to see the cost of MEG, so are waiting where possible.
“The risk consumers run is that by postponing purchases, nobody [resellers] is buying in and this could result in a rapid [price] increase,” a producer speculated.
